Homemade peppermint mocha

Tis the time of year when holiday drinks become popular. Some are great for parties while others, such as this homemade peppermint mocha, are suited for that little cozy time … just you and your hot drink with a blanket on your legs and reading a book.

Of course, a certain coffee company serves a version of the peppermint mocha that consumed at stores and expressway stops nationwide. But did you know that a large serving also delivers a whopping 440 calories, including 54 grams of sugar. Yikes.

Instead, make up this healthy peppermint mocha that is low in sugar and high in protein yet just as delish. And it’s just 195 calories!

Best Peppermint Mocha Ingredients

Coffee itself, especially high-quality, organic coffee, is linked with some impressive health benefits — such as increasing energy levels, performance and focus. That’s because coffee contains both caffeine and antioxidants, which studies show together can help promote healthy aging. About three to four cups of coffee daily seem to be the sweet spot for providing more benefits than harm.

Maple syrup is the chosen sweetener. Similar to the contrast between whole and refined grains, unrefined natural sweeteners like maple syrup contain higher levels of beneficial nutrients, antioxidants and enzymes compared to white table sugar.

Rather than use dairy milk, we suggest almond or oat milk. Unsweetened almond milk is the healthiest, as it’s lower in calories and contains some protein.

Bone Broth Protein Chocolate (you can also make with Multi Collagen Protein Chocolate) is the protein powder of choice, as it turns this into a protein coffee practically. Many people choose to drink protein coffee before workouts or in the morning to help keep hunger in check. While caffeine may be less beneficial after a workout, protein powder following exercise can help with muscle recovery and support a healthy metabolism.

Vanilla and peppermint extract add those essential holiday flavorings, and you can add some crushed peppermint candy on top of the coconut whipped cream as well. You can buy coconut whipped cream or make your own. It’s relatively low calorie and makes this drink extra yummy.

How to Make Peppermint Mocha

With just these natural ingredients, this peppermint mocha comes together pretty quickly. First brew the coffee in your favorite way. Then, in a medium saucepan, add in coffee, maple syrup, vanilla extract, peppermint extract and the Bone Broth Protein Chocolate. Whisk together until combined and place on medium heat.

Allow to heat throughout, just around two minutes. Whisk in the almond or oat milk.

Pour into a mug and top with coconut whipped cream and crushed peppermint.

Considering serving with Christmas sugar cookies, salted caramel blondies or pumpkin coffee cake.
