Frozen Watermelon Margarita Mocktail
By Holly Darnell, RD
August 17, 2023
Watermelon is one of the great hydrating foods and tastes great by itself, but it also works really well in drink recipes such as a frozen watermelon margarita mocktail. It’s beautiful and flavorful. If you want to turn it into a cocktail, it goes well with silver tequila.
This perfect blend of ingredients provide many nutrients as well as collagen for additional benefits. Make up a batch!
A frozen watermelon mocktail begins with watermelon, of course. Watermelon benefits are greater than you’d think. It’s estimated to be composed of about 91 percent water, which can help the body to detox and get rid of excess water and fluids, relieving uncomfortable bloating.
The co-star ingredient, if you will, is Multi Collagen Protein that turns this watermelon margarita into a beauty drink. Not only do these collagen peptides mix easily in the drink, the benefits include support for your skin, joints and gut.
The recipe also calls for sparkling water. The most natural form of sparkling water is sparkling mineral water, which not only naturally contains minerals, but also can be naturally carbonated.
Next is raw honey, a much better choice than sugar that’s typically deployed in watermelon margarita recipes. One tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories, yet it has a healthy glycemic load around 10 for one tablespoon, which is a little less than a banana. Raw honey contains 22 amino acids, 27 minerals and over 5,000 enzymes.
Lastly, you’ll be adding lime juice, a perfect compliment to the flavors and also loaded with antioxidants. As an option, you also add Tajín hot sauce as a flavor enhancer and to add some kick.
Overall, these ingredients make for a delicious watermelon margarita but relatively low calorie. One serving is only 111 calories and, with the collagen, contains 6 grams of protein.
Cut watermelon into cubes and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze for at least two hours.
When the watermelon is ready, add it to a high-speed blender along with the raw honey, orange juice, sparkling mineral water, lime juice, Multi Collagen Protein and ice. Blend on high until smooth.
When you’re ready to serve this fabulous drink, use a wedge of fresh lime juice and run it around the rim of a cocktail glass to moisten it. Optionally, dip the wet edge of the cocktail glass into a plate of Tajín. (You can also use some sea salt.) Rotate the glass to cover evenly.
Pour in the watermelon margarita into the cocktail glass and serve with a lime wedge. For anyone who wants the frozen watermelon margarita cocktail version, stir in a shot of tequila.
