How to Make Collagen Coffee (that's Also Keto)
By Holly Darnell, RD
April 11, 2024
It's a truism: Collagen supplementation is most effective for your skin, gut and joints when you take it daily. So while some of us prefer our collagen in a smoothie or even a cooked recipe, there are days when you just don't feel like having a smoothie or whipping up a recipe.
That's when you should simply have your daily collagen in your morning drink, whether it be water or coffee, as the unflavored Multi Collagen Protein powder seamlessly and flavorlessly mix with both. (You can also use the new Multi Collagen Advanced Lean powder with a slight cinnamon flavor.)
Want to take it a step further and create a cup of coffee that will keep you going for hours? Try this collagen coffee recipe that's full of performance fats (making it a keto coffee) as well as collagen.
It's incredibly easy to make and may become a new part of your morning ritual — and it's friendly with the keto diet, low-carb, Paleo and even intermittent fasting, as this recipe doesn't contain any carbohydrates. It also made our list of easy breakfast ideas.
Organic coffee: While you can certainly have too much, one cup of coffee comes with benefits, including tons of antioxidants, supporting liver and heart health, and boosting physical and cognitive performance.
Grass-fed butter: Butter may not provide you with protein or fiber, but it also doesn’t contain any sugar, carbs or health-hazardous trans fats. People are often terrified of saturated fat, but when saturated fat is obtained from healthy sources in moderation, like grass-fed butter and coconut oil, it provides the body much-needed fuel and helps with blood sugar stability.
Coconut oil: The benefits of this oil are real, including fighting inflammation, supporting cognitive and heart health, and boosting energy levels. The healthy fats of butter and coconut oil turn this recipe into a keto coffee with collagen.
Collagen powder: One of today's most popular supplements because it not only can generally support healthy skin elasticity, strong hair and nails, but Multi Collagen Protein can even help support gut health and joint function as well.
You can also go with Multi Collagen Advanced Lean Powder as the collagen powder. It's a healthy weight management* supplement designed to help you burn calories and boost your metabolism. It also features a proprietary fat loss blend, and select ingredients are backed by multiple clinical studies.
*In addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle, including regular exercise.
This is a breeze. Instead of loading your coffee with carbohydrate-rich milk and sugar, you add seriously beneficial fats like coconut oil. Instead of adding some creamer, you put in some vitamin-rich butter and collagen powder.
First, brew approximately one-and-a-half cups of coffee (or more), considering whether you're aiming for one or two servings. One serving will add up to 248 calories. "Wow, that's a lot for a coffee," you might say. But if you're hoping to have a coffee that will satiate you for hours, you're going to need that calorie count as well as those fat grams (25) — particularly if you're following a ketogenic diet.
A great way of brewing coffee is using a simple French press, where you place freshly ground coffee in the pitcher and then pour in boiling water. Give it a stir with a wooden stick and let it "brew" for five minutes before using the coffee press.
Pour the coffee into a high-powdered blender, along with the butter, coconut oil and collagen powder (one scoop Multi Collagen Protein unflavored powder or Multi Collagen Advanced Lean powder). Blend until well combined.
Alternatively, pour the hot coffee into a large coffee mug and then add the ingredients. Use a handheld frother to prepare the collagen coffee, or keto coffee with collagen. Whatever you want to call it, it's delicious!
If you desire simply a coffee with more protein, try our protein coffee recipe that also uses our collagen powder. You can also try our homemade cold brewed iced coffee (with collagen) recipe.
