Chai Matcha Latte (with Collagen)
By Lilly Drucis
October 28, 2025
Originating in India, chai is now popular across the globe. The chai latte, for example, is now one of the most ordered drinks in coffee shops. Meanwhile, matcha originated in Japan and is also popular worldwide, and the matcha latte is also commonly ordered at coffee shops these days.
What if you put chia and matcha into the same latte? Can the spicy, aromatic flavor of chai work with the earthy, green flavor of matcha? Turns out, absolutely. The combination creates a very unique and soothing drink — spicy, earthy and slightly sweet — that can be had hot or cold.
A chai match latte provides an energy boost in a different way than, say, a cup of coffee. Many note that it doesn’t lead to the “energy crash” that can occur with coffee. Instead, chai’s black tea provides the caffeine along with warming spices, while the matcha offers caffeine as well as amino acids for sustained energy.
As a result, you’re seeing more “chai matcha lattes” on coffee shop menu boards these days. Fortunately, you can also make it at home very easily, with just a few ingredients and with much less sugar (the so-called “chai syrup” at these coffee chains is loaded with sugar). Your afternoons just got an upgrade. Let’s get to it.
A chai matcha latte is a comforting blend that combines the bold, spiced warmth of chai tea with the earthy, vibrant flavor of matcha green tea. It’s made by blending brewed chai — typically infused with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and black pepper — with matcha powder and steamed milk or a milk alternative such as oat, almond or coconut milk.
The result is a creamy, aromatic drink that’s both energizing and soothing. A touch of sweetener like honey or maple syrup is often added to balance the spice and bitterness, creating a smooth, well-rounded flavor.
This so-called fusion drink brings together the warm, complex spices of chai with the slightly bitter, earthy notes of matcha. It often is served as a latte, and it can be enjoyed in almost any season as a cold or hot drink.
This energy-boosting drink also supports your digestion (from the chai spices) and provides many antioxidants (courtesy of the matcha).
Chai: You can simply brew a couple bags of chai with boiled water, or you can go with a pre-made chai concentrate.
Matcha: Use matcha powder — such as Ancient Elixirs Superfood Matcha (made with MCTs, adaptogenic mushrooms, ashwagandha and coffee fruit) — that you sift and then whisk with warm water.
Milk of choice: Unsweetened almond milk is usually used, but you can opt for other plant-based milks like oat or coconut. Or you may want dairy (try A2 for more digestive ease).
Collagen: For some skin, joint and gut-promoting collagen along with healthy weight management support, use cinnamon-flavored Multi Collagen Advanced Lean.
Optional sweetener: If you use Ancient Elixirs matcha, you may not need a sweetener. If you like your chai matcha latte sweet, use a little maple syrup, honey or stevia.
Energy without the jitters: Matcha contains both caffeine and L-theanine. This combination supports increased energy, weight management (in conjunction with an overall healthy diet and lifestyle) and immune system health, all without the "crash" often associated with coffee.
Boosted antioxidants: Both matcha and the spices in chai — like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves — are rich in antioxidants. Combining them may offer enhanced antioxidant benefits.
Digestive health: Traditional chai spices, such as ginger and cardamom, are often used as digestive aids.
There are different ways to layer the ingredients, but a simple method is to add the prepared chai tea and milk to a glass and top it with a shot of whisked matcha. You can customize the recipe to your preference.
To make a chai matcha latte, start by preparing the chai. Steep two bags of chai tea in half a cup of boiling water for about five minutes, then remove the tea bags and set the brewed tea aside.
Next, prepare the matcha by adding matcha powder and three tablespoons of warm water to a small bowl. Whisk vigorously with a matcha whisk until smooth and frothy.
For the milk, heat your preferred milk in the microwave for 30 seconds to one minute, then add a half-scoop of Multi Collagen Advanced Lean and froth well until light and creamy.
To assemble the drink, pour the chai into a glass, add the frothed milk, and finish by pouring the matcha on top. Add any optional sweetener, then give it a gentle stir and enjoy your layered, nourishing chai matcha latte.
