Ancient Nutrients in Modern Form
By Dr. Josh Axe
September 6, 2021
Ancient Nutrition’s mission is “to help people restore health, strength and vitality by providing history’s healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world.”
We are transforming the health of millions of consumers, through our pioneering lines of products, educational materials and an overarching emphasis on using ancient nutrients to empower the body and mind. These nutrients come from foods that were consumed traditionally by our ancestors to support a healthy response to inflammation, healthy immune system and more.
At Ancient Nutrition, we go back to basics by harnessing the power of traditional foods to maintain healthy nutrient levels for optimal health.
In the video below, I discuss the importance of getting ancient nutrients in modern form.
Our goal at Ancient Nutrition is to create whole food-based nutritional products that contain ancient nutrients, but in a modern, simple to consume form that will help people to have the strength, vitality and energy of our ancient ancestors. Every human needs to get enough essential nutrients in his or her diet because the body doesn’t make them on its own. These food groups, herbs and spices that were sources of life for our ancestors continue to be critical to optimal health today.
From 2007 to 2014, I ran my functional medicine clinic in Nashville. It was there where I recognized how many people lacked essential nutrients in their diets and how many could be helped by the transformative benefits of foods like bone broth.
For our ancestors, making bone broth was a time-consuming process and expecting modern day adults to make it at home to consume for their own health is impractical. I knew that if patients could start getting bone broth in their diets every day, it would change their health , so I teamed up with Ancient Nutrition co-founder Jordan Rubin to create a bone broth powder that serves as a health-focused and easy way to consume one of our ancestor’s most fundamental sources of nutrients.
This implementation of ancient nutrients in our product formulas is something that sets Ancient Nutrition apart from other companies in the health and wellness space. Our innovation and attention to combining the most impactful ingredients is paramount.
We create products that are rooted in tradition, incorporating ancient nutrients that have been consumed for centuries to promote overall health and balance.
Essential nutrients are compounds that the body can’t make itself in sufficient amounts, so it needs to acquire them through dietary sources. Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are considered macronutrients, which are energy providing nutrients that are needed in relatively large amounts by humans and other living organisms. We simply cannot live without getting enough of these three macronutrients in our diets, as they are essential for healthy growth and development, brain function and more.
Vitamins and minerals are considered micronutrients because we consume them in smaller amounts in order to maintain healthy levels. Micronutrients are found in trace amounts in the foods we eat, but many people aren’t consuming a healthy diet that contains these important nutrients.
The body uses dozens of micronutrients every hour of the day to maintain healthy energy levels, hormone balance, digestion and brain function. Supplementing with micronutrients is an easy way to maintain healthy levels and not come up short on certain nutrients.
Ancient nutrients are traditional foods and spices that contain the macronutrients and micronutrients that we need to thrive.
(Of course, you should always consult your healthcare professional prior to beginning any new dietary or lifestyle regimen, including dietary supplementation.)
Some of the top ancient nutrients that you can consume in an easy, modern form, include:
We consider bone broth the original superfood, as its components have been used throughout history to help support overall health. Consuming bone broth is valued for its ability to support gut, skin and joint health. It has an impressive nutrient profile, which includes glucosamine, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus.
Ancient Nutrition offers Bone Broth Protein (BBP) that’s derived from real bone broth liquid, but concentrated and in powder form. This is an easy and effective way to obtain ancient nutrients, including protein/amino acids.
Turmeric has been used to support a healthy response to inflammation for centuries. It contains compounds, such as curcumin, that support joint health and muscle strength.
Ancient Nutrition’s Organic Turmeric Tablets feature the Ayurvedic combination of turmeric root and black pepper, which helps to enhance absorption. We also harness the ancient practice of fermentation to support the absorption of nutrients.
Ancient Nutrition’s Organic SuperGreens powder is prepared with a combination of ancient superfoods including vegetables, berries, grasses, algae and more. It features beneficial ingredients like ashwagandha root, spirulina, elderberry and chlorella, reishi and matcha.
Adding one scoop of SuperGreens powder to your daily smoothie or fresh juice will help to support healthy detoxification, promote healthy digestive function and more.
Healthy fats are essential macronutrients that humans need to maintain homeostasis. We need a healthy balance of omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, which provide proper balance and play a role in a range of body functions, including healthy immune system, healthy cardiovascular system, exercise performance and a healthy response to oxidative stress.
Ancient Nutrition’s Ancient Omega Whole Body Softgels contain 1,000 milligrams of omega-3s obtained from tuna oil, herring roe oil and hoki oil. These softgels also offer a healthy balance of fat blends, allowing it to serve as a whole body approach.
Vitamin D is one of the most important ancient nutrients, as it’s responsible for hundreds of reactions in the body, including functions needed at the DNA level. Vitamin D supports cardiovascular, bone and immune system health. While direct sun exposure is the best way to maintain healthy vitamin D levels, that’s not always possible.
Taking a supplement, like the Ancient Nutrients Vitamin D Capsules, is an effective way to maintain proper vitamin D levels. These capsules feature probiotic-fermented vitamin D, vitamin K, astragalus root and nutrient-filled bovine liver.

How to Hydrate Skin
Even if you employ a daily skincare routine, many of us get frustrated with the results. It’s hard to be happy with the way your skin looks if it’s occasionally dry, dull or sensitive, which is why skin hydration is so important. With loads of serums, moisturizers and beauty routines (such as the new trend called skin cycling) available, it’s difficult to know what really hydrates skin versus what’s a waste of your money and time.

Pumpkin Spice Waffles
When I think of fun, delicious waffles, I dream up buttermilk and pumpkin spice. However, because I seek to avoid too much dairy, I've decided to create a buttermilk-like mixture. As for the pumpkin spice, this recipe for Pumpkin Spice goes for it with the super popular Bone Broth Protein Pumpkin Spice as well as some complementing ingredients.
