How to Make Protein Cold Foam

Protein cold foam

The added protein trend isn’t going anywhere, with the latest entry being “protein cold foam.” After all, increasingly more people understand that protein helps you build lean muscle, boosts your metabolism, keeps your full (aka less likely to overeat later) and supports healthy weight management.

One place where protein is being added on the regular? The coffee shop where protein cold foam is added to different kinds of coffee, mostly cold coffee drinks.

The issue is that most coffee shops are somewhat secretive about what exactly is in their protein cold foam, including how many calories, the exact ingredients, the amount of sugar, etc. But people who are interested in adding more protein to their diet usually want to know!

So now some good news. You can make your own protein cold foam, with just a couple of ingredients, at home and quickly. You’re also going to know its nutrition facts, which are outstanding — we’re talking 15 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of fat.

What is protein cold foam?

Protein cold foam is a light, creamy topping made by blending a protein powder with milk or a milk alternative until it becomes thick and frothy. It's designed to sit on top of iced coffee drinks— such as cold brew, iced coffee or iced lattes — adding extra protein while creating a smooth, café-style finish.

Unlike a protein shake, protein cold foam has an airy texture similar to the sweet cream cold foam served at many coffee shops. It's typically made with a frother or blender using ingredients like protein powder, milk and optional flavorings such as vanilla, cinnamon, maple syrup or stevia.

The result is a delicious way to boost the protein content of your morning coffee without significantly changing the flavor or adding a heavy texture. Protein cold foam can also be customized with different protein powders and milks to suit your taste and nutrition goals.

Key ingredients

Just three simple ingredients are all you need to make a creamy, protein-packed cold foam that tastes like it came from your favorite coffee shop.

Fairlife® whole milk is an ideal base because it's ultra-filtered to provide more protein and less sugar than regular milk, while still creating a rich, velvety foam. Its higher protein content also helps the foam whip up with a light, stable texture.

A good substitute is “barista oat milk” if you want plant-based milk, as this type of oat milk can create a thick, cream foam. If you want dairy but don’t have Fairlife, consider using whole milk or reduced fat milk. You can add a little half-and-half, too.

Ancient Nutrition’s Vanilla Whey Protein adds high-quality, complete protein to help support muscle recovery, satiety and healthy body composition. The vanilla flavor naturally complements coffee, while the whey protein helps create a thick, creamy foam that blends beautifully with the milk.

A touch of stevia or maple syrup adds just the right amount of sweetness. Stevia provides sweetness without added sugar or calories, while maple syrup offers a subtle caramel-like flavor for those who prefer a natural sweetener. Adjust the amount to suit your taste.

Together, these ingredients create a smooth, frothy cold foam that's rich in protein, easy to make, and the perfect finishing touch for cold brew, iced coffee or an iced latte.

How to make

Making protein cold foam at home is surprisingly easy and takes less than a minute. Start by pouring your cold milk into a small glass or measuring cup. Using cold milk is key because it froths much better than milk that's been sitting at room temperature, creating a thicker, creamier foam.

Next, add your Ancient Nutrition’s Vanilla Whey Protein along with any sweetener or flavorings you'd like, such as stevia or a drizzle of maple syrup. Remember that a little stevia goes a long way. Give the mixture a quick stir with a spoon to help dissolve the protein powder and prevent clumps before frothing.

Place a handheld milk frother into the mixture and froth for 30 to 60 seconds, or until the milk transforms into a light, fluffy, café-style foam. The finished cold foam should be thick enough to sit on top of your drink while still being smooth and pourable.

Finally, spoon or gently pour the protein cold foam over your favorite cold brew, iced coffee or iced latte. Enjoy it immediately for a delicious way to add extra protein and a creamy coffeehouse touch to your morning cup.

Frequently asked questions

How much protein does protein cold foam add?

The protein content depends on the ingredients you use. A serving made with ½ scoop of Ancient Nutrition Vanilla Whey Protein and ¼ cup of Fairlife® whole milk provides approximately 15 grams of protein.

Can I make protein cold foam ahead of time?

Protein cold foam is best enjoyed immediately after frothing. If it sits for too long, the foam will gradually separate and lose its airy texture.

What if you don’t have a frother?

You don't need a handheld milk frother to make delicious protein cold foam. If you have a small blender, simply blend the ingredients for 20–30 seconds until light and frothy. You can also use a mini food processor or an immersion blender to achieve a similar creamy texture.

Another easy option is to pour the ingredients into a sealed mason jar or shaker bottle and shake vigorously for 30–60 seconds. While the foam won't be quite as thick as one made with a frother, it will still create a light, creamy topping for your coffee.

Can I use any protein powder?

Whey protein generally creates the creamiest, most stable foam because it blends easily and froths well. Other protein powders, such as collagen or plant-based proteins, may not produce the same fluffy texture.

Can I sweeten or flavor my protein cold foam?

Absolutely. Stevia, maple syrup, honey, vanilla extract, cinnamon or sugar-free flavored syrups are all great options for customizing the flavor.
